contemplation practice
Sitting with the Grief
Before you begin
Choose a private, comfortable place where feelings would be safe. Have water nearby.
The practice, step by step — read it all first if you like
Make room
Place a hand where the grief lives in your body. Say inwardly: you are allowed to be here.
Name it
Name who or what you are grieving, aloud or silently, as many times as needed.
Let it speak
Let the grief say whatever it says — sorrow, anger, love, bewilderment — without correcting it.
Be accompanied
Imagine one steady presence sitting beside you: a person, the Divine, an old tree. Let them stay.
Accessibility
All steps work silently; crying is welcome but never required.
How long do you have?
Or read through it quietly above, at your own pace.
